Money or God - A philosophical debate

As we come to the end of our R.E. topic around the question WHAT WOULD JESUS DO?, we had a philosophical debate around the question - IS IT BETTER FOR OUR WORLD TO WORSHIP MONEY OR GOD?

The children gave some extremely well thought out comments and expressed themselves respectfully.

Below you can find a summary of our debate.

Reasons for worshiping money

  • A lot of life isn’t possible without money, and we need money so we can have the basics to survive.
  • If some people didn’t make money, then we couldn’t support the poor and help people.
  • Many people who work to earn a lot of money are also good and humble. They use their money to help others.
  • We wouldn’t be able to enjoy the life God gave us if we didn’t have the money to do things.
  • Money can be used towards good things like getting an education and making the world a better place.
  • It is a human thing to want more. If we didn’t have money, people would find more of something to want.

Reasons for worshiping God rather than money.

  • If nobody had money and we just looked after each other, then everyone would be equal and therefore happier.
  • As God says, you cannot take money to heaven with you.
  • Being good on earth means that we can look forwards to going heaven and you know God is happy.
  • You don’t need to earn money. God will give you the things that you need.
  • Being kind to others makes the world a good place. You don’t need money to make the world a happy place.
