Evacuated to Hitchin!
This week, Year 6 experienced what it would have been like to have been an evacuee during World War II. During their visit to the British Schools Museum, they put themselves in the position of a child who had just been evacuated from Battersea to Hitchin. The day started with gas mask practice and then each of the children wrote a letter to their mother to let them know that they had arrived safely. The arithmetic lesson was quite a challenge, trying to add ounces, pounds and stones! We saw so many interesting World War II artefacts and a real highlight was going down into the shelter when we heard the air raid siren. The day finished with 'drill' in the playground. The children now have a much better understanding of what it would have been like to have been an evacuee and, having experienced wartime lessons, they now realise that their own teachers aren't that strict after all!
